Areas of Responsibility

• Assist with the development of industry positions by conducting analysis for the pulp and paper and wood products sectors related to climate change;

• Work closely with and provide support to FPAC’s Environment Committee by responding to requests, engaging in collaborative problem solving and issues management, and sharing file-specific communications.

• Provide support through the day-to-day management of chemicals management portfolio, which includes initiatives related to the risk assessment and risk management of chemical substances through Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Chemicals Management Plan. The incumbent will be responsible for the development of industry positions on behalf of the sector, and will work with the FPAC Environment Committee to gather and analyze and submit sector data for s.71 notices;

• Review consultation documents, conducting relevant analyses, and engaging with the Environment Committee to develop industry positions related to National Pollutant Releases Inventory (NPRI) reporting and various regulatory and non-regulatory initiatives under the Environmental Emergencies Regulations, and the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act;

• Maintain partnerships with Statistics Canada and the associations collection and analysis of annual industry data-gathering initiatives on energy, environment, and environmental expenditures. This works requires significant engagement with member and non-member company facility operations to collect, compile, sample, and conduct analysis to report on environmental sustainability performance indicators. Ongoing engagement with Statistics Canada is also required to QA/QC data in fulfillment of FPAC data-sharing agreements.

Qualifications

• Completed undergraduate degree in chemical engineering, environmental science/engineering, or other related field;

• Reliable, motivated individual with a willingness and passion to learn and grow professionally

• Proactive and diligent

• Detailed-oriented

• Political acumen

• Must be able to perform well under tight timelines.

• Highly skilled in using Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;

• Ability to establish professional relationships with industry players and partners

Assets

• Knowledge of the Canadian forest products industry;

• Understanding of basic engineering principles and environment challenges;

• Familiarity with federal environmental initiatives (such as the Chemicals Management Plan and the National Pollutant Releases Inventory);

• Fast learner who can work independently, and as a part of a team;

• Strong analytical skills and ability to think critically;

• Strong communication skills – both verbal and writing;

• Highly skilled in using Microsoft Office – Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;

• Ability to prepare reports, presentations and conduct various analyses in Excel;

• Attention to detail.
